A clinical analysis of the 212 patients who received the gastroendoscopy was performed in Cheonju Presbyterian Medical Center. The Endoscopic findings were compared with the radiologic findings, clinical symptoms and operative findings.
The following results were obtained.
1. The Olympus G.I.F. gastrointestinal fiberscope allowed the examination for esophagus, stomach and duodenum.
2. The most common disease of the stomach was gastritis (40.1%). Among the gastritis, atrophic gastritis was most common (81.0%).
3. In the 62 cases of the stomach cancer, 47 cases (75.8%) showed definite filling defect by radiologic studies, but others revealed suspicious findings.
Direct visual biopsies were performed in 60 cases and confirmed the diagnosis in 50 cases, but in 10 cases only necrotic tissue was obtained because of inadequate biopsy site.
4. Chief complaint and duration of illness were not helpful for the differential diagnosis of various lesions of the stomach.
5. Among the 26 cases of stomach cancer who received surgical operation, the patient who belonged to Borrmann¢¥s type I and II, received radical gastrectomy. Only half of the patients who belonged to type III received radical gastrectomy.
All of the patients who belonged to type IV and undetermined type received palliative surgical operation.
